Below is a portrait of Sirius,
a World Trade Center bomb sniffing dog that was killed during the collapse.

Sirius was below ground level when the first plane hit. His handler, Officer David Lim, told Sirius to stay as he ran up the emergency stairs to investigate. Officer Lim was buried in the stairwell when the tower collapsed but was pulled from the debris by rescuers.

The partners were part of the Port Authority K-9 Unit.

Sirius' body was recovered on January 22, 2002

Officer Lim rushed to Ground Zero to be there for the recovery of his dog after he was notified that the kennel had been found. It appears that Sirius was killed instantly.

Sirius received full police honors when his body was carried out. Everyone became silent and saluted as Officer Lim carried his flag draped companion to a waiting police truck.

The Port Authority Police held a memorial service for Sirius in April 2002.
He received a 21 gun salute and those paying their respects came from as far as California.

The New York Humane Society placed a memorial brick on the Walk of Honor in remembrance of Sirius.

"Heaven goes by favor, if it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in."
